What are dental implants?

The lack of one or more teeth has a strong impact on anyone’s self-confidence and comfort. In this sense, when the patient loses one or more teeth, dental implants emerge as one of the most reliable alternatives.

How do dental implants work?
Dental implants are titanium devices, which are screwed into the bone of the maxilla or jawbone and serve as substitutes for the root of one or more teeth. After this and during the healing period, still with a temporary dental prosthesis, the phenomenon of osseointegration occurs. This phenomenon is characterised by the growth of the bone surrounding the implant and thus the implant becomes part of the bone. Then, the definitive dental prosthesis is placed and the patient can enjoy all the advantages of using a fixed dental prosthesis.

Advantages of having a dental implant:
Dental implants have several advantages over other treatments like:
– Durability;
– Natural aesthetics;
– Safety;
– They do not cause damage to other teeth;
– They help to preserve the bone.

What type of dental implants are there?
There are various implant options that can be applied, taking into account the needs of each patient:
Single implant – when there is a lack of only one tooth or several teeth, but in different sites;
Double implant (or dental bridge) – when three teeth are missing in successive positions;
Implant for Fixed Prosthesis (All-on-4 or All-on-6) – in cases where most or all the teeth of one dental arch have been lost.

Is the surgery to place one or more implants painful?
No! The surgery is performed using local or general anaesthetic, depending on the circumstances. Therefore, you will not feel pain during the procedure and after the implantation, you will be medicated so that any possible pain can be alleviated.

Can the dental implant be rejected by the organism?
All dental implants require a prior study, and it is in this process that all potential contraindications to the surgery and whether the patient is suitable to receive a dental implant are evaluated. In this case, there is no possibility of the body rejecting the implant. However, although it is rare, the bone may not integrate with the implant or there may be infections that jeopardise the effectiveness of the treatment.
